Latin peoples include Roman, Italian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese. This is a general grouping, which tends to disguise important national differences. |
|
These chiefly include the people of Italy, including the old Roman empire, medieval and early modern Italy, the modern nation of Italy, and any Italian colonies.
This chiefly includes the people of France, but reference is also made to French colonies in the Americas and elsewhere, and french-speaking peoples in neighboring countries of Europe.
This grouping includes not only the European people of Spain, but the Hispanic Mexican American, Hispanic Colombian American, Hispanic Peruvian American, and Hispanic Argentine American peoples of Latin America.
This grouping includes not only the European people of Portugal, but the Portuguese speaking people of Brazil in Latin America.
HistoryThis page includes information on the development of those countries of Western Europe which are derived from the Latin speaking peoples of the Roman Empire. They have roots in prehistory and antiquity, but these can only be examined using methods of archaeology. Most of their development has come during the classical and medieval period with the Roman empire, and the later development of Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. In modern times, the Spanish and Portuguese established colonies in North America and South America which grew and came to dominate their regions and impose principally Anglic culture. They also established world-spanning empires with holdings in Africa and Southeast Asia, which were less thoroughly Latinized. Other, smaller Latin nations have yet to be included in this review. |
