History of Latin peoples

This page includes information on the development of those countries of Western Europe which are derived from the Latin speaking peoples of the Roman Empire. They have roots in prehistory and antiquity, but these can only be examined using methods of archaeology.

Most of their development has come during the classical and medieval period with the Roman empire, and the later development of Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. In modern times, the Spanish and Portuguese established colonies in North America and South America which grew and came to dominate their regions and impose principally Anglic culture. They also established world-spanning empires with holdings in Africa and Southeast Asia, which were less thoroughly Latinized. Other, smaller Latin nations have yet to be included in this review. The French also built a colonial empire, but it was less extensive and influential than those of the Spanish and Portuguese. The Italians remained confined largely to the region of the Mediterraneans Sea.

History

Italic peoples can be followed from prehistoric origins through antiquity, classical and medieval times, and modern times. French peoples can also be followed from prehistoric origins through antiquity and classical and medieval times. They expanded somewhat in modern times. Hispanic peoples are not especially well known in prehistoric times or antiquity. They developed more in classical and medieval times and expanded greatly in modern times. Lusitanic peoples were not well distinguished from Hispanic peoples in prehistory or antiquity, and separation occurred in classical and medieval times. They expanded greatly in modern times.

Prehistory

The origins of Latin peoples are obscure. Little is known of them in prehistory, although studies of prehistoric peoples have been conducted in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. Early prehistory is considered in Italy, France, and Spain.

Middle prehistory is noted for the presence of modern humans with significantly developed cultures. Predecessors of Italic peoples and French peoples can be identified. [Hispanic peoples and Lusitanic peoples are not yet well connected] I do not yet have details of the period beginning 50,000 years ago, the period beginning 40,000 years ago, the period beginning 30,000 years ago, or the period beginning 20,000 years ago.

Late prehistory is marked by the origin of Mesolithic cultures. Predecessors of Italic and French peoples can be identified [Hispanic and Lusitanic peoples are not yet well connected.] I do not yet have details of the early 8th millennium BC, the late 8th millennium BC, the early 7th millennium BC, the late 7th millennium BC, the early 6th millennium BC, or the late 6th millennium BC.

Antiquity

Evidence of Latin peoples can be found in antiquity and so far includes Italic, French, Hispanic, and Lusitanic peoples.

They are little known in the 5th millennium BC. Italic peoples had farming villages, French peoples were in transition from Mesolithic to Neolithic cultures, and Spain is being considered. I do not yet have details of the early 5th millennium BC, the early mid 5th millennium BC, the mid 5th millennium BC, the late mid 5th millennium BC, or the late 5th millennium BC.

I also do not have details of the 4th millennium, although Italy, France and Spain are being considered for this period as well. I do not yet have details of the early 4th millennium BC, the early mid 4th millennium BC, the mid 4th millennium BC, the late mid 4th millennium BC, or the late 4th millennium BC. In the 3rd millennium BC, Bronze working was had begun in Italy, though I know little of France or Spain. I do not yet have details of the early 3rd millennium BC, the early mid 3rd millennium BC, the mid 3rd millennium BC, the late mid 3rd millennium BC, or the late 3rd millennium BC. In the 2nd millennium BC, it is believed that peoples speaking Italic languages arrived in Italy, and peoples speaking Celtic languages arrived in what is now France. I have no details for Spain. I do not yet have details of the early 2nd millennium BC, the early mid 2nd millennium BC, the mid 2nd millennium BC, the late mid 2nd millennium BC, or the late 2nd millennium BC. Latin peoples begin to appear in the historical record in the early 1st millennium. Among Italiic peoples, In Italy, a people known as the Etruscans ruled the Italic speaking peoples, and the city of Rome is said to have been founded. Among French peoples, I have little information on France, or what was then Gaul. Among Hispanic peoples, I have little information on what is now Spain. Details of the 10th century BC, the 9th century BC, the 8th century BC, the 7th century BC, and 6th century BC are obscure.

Classical and medieval

Latin peoples were especially prominent in classical and medieval history. Italic peoples predominated for much of this period with the Roman Empire. French peoples developed, centered in what is now France, Hispanic peoples developed into what is now Spain, and Lusitanic peoples developed into what is now Portugal.

In early classical times, Italy was the seat of the Roman republic. Gaul, which was inhabited by Celtic peoples, was conquered and became part of the Roman republic. I do not yet have details of the 5th century BC, the 4th century BC, the 3rd century BC, the 2nd cenury BC, or the 1st century BC.

In Late classical times, the Romans incorporated what later became France into the Roman Empire. The Roman empire established a new capital in what is now Turkey, and divided into Eastern and Western halves. The Western half, including Italy, collapsed under invasions of Germanic peoples. I do not yet have details of the 1st century CE, 2nd century CE, 3rd century CE, 4th century CE, or 5th century CE.

During early medieval times, the Germanic tribes known as the Franks ruled what was formery known as Gaul. Italy had been invaded and was fragmented. I do not yet have details of the 6th century, 7th century, 8th century, 9th century, or 10th century.

During Late medieval times, Italy was divided. Many of the Crusades originated here, Later the Italian Renaissance began. France developed as an important nation. Hispanic peoples were involved in the reconquest of Spain from Islamic rulers, and by the end of the period, exploration of the New World of the Americas had begun. I do not yet have details of the 11th century, 12th century, 13th century, 14th century. In the 15th century, the first contact of Lusitanic peoples with the Americas was made, as Pedro Alvares Cabral landed in what is now Brazil in 1500.

Modern

Latin peoples continued to be important throughout modern history, and there were numerous European Continental developments. Italic peoples did not have an Atlantic coast, and were eclipsed by the other Latin peoples. French peoples expanded in parallel with the Portuguese and Hispanic peoples. Hispanic peoples also extended to the newly discovered New World. Lusitanic peoples extended beyond Europe as Portugal began to establish an overseas empire in Africa, in parts of Asia, and in what is now Brazil. These can be followed through the 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century.
