Most of their development has come during the classical and medieval period. with the nation now known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. In modern times, the British established colonies in North America and Australia which grew and came to dominate their regions and impose principally Anglic culture. They also established a world-spanning empire with holdings in Africa and India, which were less thoroughly Anglicized. The United States of America, which broke away from British rule has become the pre-eminent world power in the last century. Canada occupies most of the remaninder of North America. Australia is also a significant nation. Other, smaller Anglic nations have yet to be included in this review. |
