Twentieth Century History of Peoples of the World

Western dominance of other peoples declined in this century, and Asiatic peoples became dominant. The early conquest of African peoples was reversed, leaving the peoples in disorder. American Indian peoples were submerged. This can be followed through the early 20th century, early mid 20th century, mid 20th century, late-mid 20th century, and late 20th century.

20th Century

Western Civilization began to lose its dominant position over the rest of the world, though it retained vast cultural influence. Anglic peoples lost substantial influence with the decline of the British Empire, but the United States was so influential that this period is often called the American Century. The Latin peoples were not as successful, and fared poorly in the two World Wars. The Germanic peoples lost their overseas posesssions and suffered severely in the two World Wars and the subsequent Cold war, but retained a strong position. Northeast European peoples were dominated by Communism, as the Russian empire was transformed into the USSR, which collapsed at the end of the century. The Balkan peoples struggled with the legacy of Ottoman dominance and were also heavily influenced by the struggle between Commonism and the "Free world". Scandinavian peoples seem to have been a bit less influential than formerly.

Asiatic peoples began to regain their political independence. In the Middle East, the Ottoman empire broke up into a collection of states in which Islam was a cultural though not politically unifying influence. South Asian peoples gained their independence, althought there was a substantial British legacy. Central Asia was submerged by the USSR and China. The Orient was divided, as China unified under a Communist government, and Japan, which had industrialized attempted to dominate the Orient and Southeast Asia in the Second World War was defeated, but afterwards allied with the Western powers that had defeated it and became a major economic power.

African peoples gained their political independence, but in Eastern Arrica, Western Africa, Southern African, and Central Africa were poor and politically divided and unstable.

American Indian peoples in Meso-america, South America, and North America were generally submerged and forgotten in the westernized nations of the Americas.

Early 20th century

The First World War absorbed Western energy, and Anglic, Latin, Germanic, and Northeast European peoples were involved. The first effective resistance to European conquests took place in Asia. The Ottoman empire fell in the Middle East. South Asian peoples began to resist British rule Central Asia was ruled by Russia and China. Among Oriental peoples, the last chinese empire fell. Southeast Asia was mostly under Western rule. African peoples including East Africa, West African, Southern African, and Central African peoples remained mostly under Western rule. American Indian peoples including Middle American Indian peoples South American Indian peoples, and North American Indian peoples, though still present, practically disappeared from view. I do not yet have details for the early 1900s, late 1900s, early 1910s, or late 1910s.

Early mid 20th Century

In the early mid 20th century, the Western colonial powers seemed to concentrate on developing their existing conquests rather than making new ones. Anglic peoples, Latin peoples, Germanic peoples, and Northeast European peoples are considered. Asiatic peoples including Middle Eastern, South Asian, Central Asian, Oriental, and Southeast Asian can be considered. African peoples including Eastern African, West African, South African, and Central African peoples can be connected. Mid 20th Century

In the mid-20th century, Western Civilization was heavily involved in World War II. After the war, most of the Western nations were divided between a "free world" and a "communist bloc", in what was called the Cold War. Western rule over most of Asia was abandoned or defeated in the aftermath of the war. Anglic peoples were victorious and became the leaders of the "free world". Latin peoples were somewhat aligned with the free world. Germanic peoples, defeated in World War II, were divided between the two major groups. Northeast European peoples were dominated by the "Communis bloc", Asiatic peoples were divided between the two Western-led camps, but there was a strong "third world" or nonaligned movement also. In the Middle East, establishment of the state of Israel caused lasting tensions. South Asia became independent. Central Asian peoples were mostly under Russian or Chinese rule. the Orient was divided between China, where a Communist government took power, and Japan, which had been defeated and occupied following World War II. Most of Southeast Asia became politically independent. The "decolonization movement" took hold among the colonial powers and parts of Eastern Africa, Western Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa were granted independence. American Indian peoples including Middle American Indian peoples, South American Indian peoples, and North American Indian peoples were submerged. The early 1940s have a couple of nations to be considered. The late 1940s have a couple of nations. The early 1950s are just beginning to be analyzed using nations, and Western Civilization.
