Tanzania is one of the 40 most populous countries in the world. History Sites within the nation are important in prehistory including early prehistory, late prehistory, and middle preahistory. Various peoples are known to have settled here in antiquity. I do not yet have details for the 5th millennum BC, 4th millennium BC, 3rd millennium BC, 2nd millennium BC, or early first millennium BC. Various native kingdoms arose in classical and medieval times, though I do not yet have details on early classical, late classical, early medieval, or late medieval times. Much of its history is modern. In the 16th century, the Portuguese began to dominate the coast, and traded through the 17th and 18th centuries. Arab traders began to dominate the area in the 18th century. I have few details of the 19th century, including the early 19th century, early-mid 19th century, mid 19th century, late-mid 19th century, or late 19th century except that around this time the Germans occupied the country as part of their colonial empire.
