Canada is one of the 40 most populous countries in the world. HistoryCanada's prehistory and antiquity are discussed under American Indians. During classical and medieval times it was visited by people from the Old world, including the Vikings who established a settlement, but their presence was not permanent. I do not have details of early classical, late classical, or early medieval times. In late medieval times, I have no details of the 11th century CE, 12th century CE, 13th century CE, or 15th century CE. In the 15th century CE there were early explorations by John Cabot in 1497, who claimed the coast for Britain. Modern HistoryCanada's history as a nation is almost entirely modern. In the 16th century, a few settlements on the coast were founded by fishers and whalers. There were early expeditions by Jacque Cartier in 1534, who claimed Canada for France. In the 17th century, the French began to settle, followed by the British.
