Argentina

Argentina is one of the 40 most populous countries in the world.

History

Its history during prehistory, antiquity, and classical and medieval times is occupied by American Indian peoples. In modern times, these were virtually replaced by immigrants largely from Spain beginning in the 16th century. I do not yet have details of the early 16th century, early mid 16th century, mid 16th century, late-mid 16th century, or late 16th century. I do not yet have details of Argentina in the 17th century including the early 17th century, early-mid 17th century, mid 17th century, or late mid 17th century. I do not yet have details of the 18th century, including the early 18th century, early mid 18th century, mid 18th century, late-mid 18th century, or late 18th century.

In the 19th century it gained political independence from Spain. In the early 19th century there were the beginnings of an independence movement. In the early-mid 19th century its independence was recognized. In the mid 19th century a constitution was adopted. I do not yet have details of the early 1840s, late 1840s, early 1850s, or late 1850s. I have few details of the late mid 19th century including the early 1860s, late 1860s, early 1870s, or late 1870s. In the late 19th century the country began to modernize, although I do not yet have many details of the early 1880s, late 1880s, early 1890s, or late 1890s.

Argentina has been politically unstable during much of the 20th century. In the early 20th century including the early 1900s, late 1900s, early 1910s, and late 1910s it prospered and was not involved in the European war. In the early-mid 20th century including the early 1920s, late 1920s, early 1930s, and late 1930s the depression prompted a decade of military rule. In the mid 20th century, it eventally entered World War II on the allied side. After the war, Juan Peron dominated the contry's government, but opposition eventually unseated him. I do not yet have details of the early 1940s, late 1940s, early 1950s, or late 1950s. In the late mid 20th century, he returned to power, but there was violent political conflict between his supporters, the Peronistas, and their opposition. After his wife and successor was overthrown in a coup, the military government became notorious for causing political opponents to "disappear". I do not yet have details of the early 1960s, late 1960s, early 1970s, or late 1970s.

In the late 20th century, various developments occurred. In the early 1980s, it attempted to sieze the Falkland Islands, but was defeated by the British in the Falkland Islands war (1982). The military government yielded to a civilian government headed by Raul Alfonsin, who presided through most of the late 1980s. He was succeeded by Carlos Menem. I do not yet have details of 1986, 1986, 1988, 1989, or 1990. In the early 1990s, Menem won reelection. I do not yet hve details of 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, or 1995. He governed through most of the late 1990s and was succeded by Fernando de la Rua. I do not yet have details of 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, or 2000.
