Sociology of the United States

Athough the United States has been assigned to the general category of sociology, there are so many other aspects to be considered that they require a separate page to be considered.

Other nations and peoples can be connected to the United States. Communities are significant. Social structure and change can be applied.

The sociology of the United States is closely tied to other related areas of knowledge. In particular, the history and institutions of the United States are important. Culture, anthropology, personal studies, and science are important.

Sociology

Other elements of sociology can be applied in more detail to the northern United States, southern United States, and western United States.

Other Peoples

Other nations can be connected to the United States. Other peoples of Western Civilization, American Indian peoples, African peoples, and Asiatic peoples in approximately that order of importance can be connected. There are some regional differences in the connections to the northern United States, southern United States, and western United States.

Communities

There are several major cities that will be examined in particular as the site develops. These include:

1 Oct 2008 - The National Transportation Safety Board reported that a Metrolink engineer sent a text message 22 seconds before the Chatsworth train collision in Los Angeles, California, that killed 25 people.

3 Oct 2008 - A jury convicted retired American football player O.J. Simpson of armed robbery and kidnapping, 13 years to the day after he was acquitted of killing his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles.

13 Oct 2008 - Summer 2008 California wildfires A second wildfire broke out in the hills above Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley prompting mandatory evacuations. Santa Ana winds caused an existing fire in the Angeles National Forest north of Los Angeles to flare up resulting in the closure of two freeways.

23 Oct 2008 - The New York City Council voted 29–22 in favor of extending the term limit on the office of the Mayor to three consecutive four-year terms from two consecutive four-year terms. This allows current Mayor Michael Bloomberg to run for office again in the next mayoral election in November 2009.

Social structure and change

Social change

Particular changes

The Agricultural revolution had mostly ended by the time the US had been founded.

The United States participated in later events of the agrarian revolution. The Bronze age, the early iron age, and the late iron age had mostly ended, but it participated in events of modernization.

The US became a leader in the Industrial revolution. It followed in the early industrial revolution, but became an important leader in the middle Industrial revolution, and led the computerization process.

Social change factors

Institutional change can be connected. Cultural change can be connected. Demographic change can be connected. Natural change can be connected.

10 Oct 2008 - The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that gay and lesbian couples had the right to marry in Connecticut.

Social change processes

Innovation can be connected. Transmission can be connected. Adaptation can be connected. Extinction can be connected.

Social types

The United States has become principally an industrial society, and early industrial society, middle industrial society, and late industrial society can all be examined. The United States was settled as an agrarian type of society, principally of the early modern type. There are few horticultural peoples in the United States, except for some of the American Indian peoples. There are no hunting and gathering peoples remaining in the United States.

Social structure

Community structure is signficant because the United States is politically divided into 50 states, plus a number of territories and other dependencies. These can be grouped into three major regional divisions, the North, South, and West.

The class structure is largely informal. There is a large but incomplete degree of intermarriage and cultural assimilation among the various peoples that live in the United States, so that it was commonly thought of as a melting pot, where it is now considered something like a stew. Women, children, disabled, and elderly as well as linguistic and religious groups are sometimes considered social classes. Until the Civil war of the 19th century, there were legally distinct free and slave classes. Although slavery was officially abolished, a system of legal discrimination maintained certain class distinctions until the late-mid 20th century. Informal discrimination and racial prejudice remains widespread. There is also an informal class structure based on wealth, income, and education.

Institutional structure is fairly complex. Government is the chief unifying influence, although economics is also important. The government controls education. Religion and government are distinct and often rival one other. Families are at the base of society, but few are large and influential.

Cultural structure can be connected. Anthropological structure can be connected.
