In 2001, after a terrorist attack on New York City, the US began what was called a war on terror by attacking Afghanistan, and reorganized several government agencies with what was called the Patriot act. In 2002, conflict continued. Several corporations were found dubious or fraudulent accounting practices. The Homeland Security Act created the Department of Homeland Security, the largest reorganization of federal agencies since WW II. In 2003, the US invaded Iraq. Although Saddam Hussein was deposed and later captured, a prolonged insurgent movement continued to cause casualties. In 2004, Bush won re-election over the Democratic Nominee John Kerry. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, resulting in the breach of levees and flooding of 80% of the city. Other parts of the Gulf coast were affected by it and other hurricanes.
Recent events of the late 2000s including 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 can be considered.
Events of the early 2010s are so far confined to the current year 2011 and are still being compiled.
