Turkey is one of the 20 most populous countries in the world. History Turkey, which occupies Asia Minor and is also also known as Anatolia was important in prehistoric periods and in antiquity. It was occupied in classical and medieval times by the Turkish peoples and became the seat of the Seljuk and Ottoman empires. The Ottoman empire ruled much of what is now the Middle East well into modern times, until it ws reduced to what is now Turkey in the 20th century.
