Prehistory is at present nearly inaccessible, although remains known as Java man have been found that date from early prehistory. It was presumably settled by modern humans in the middle prehistoric period, though specific details are lacking. The period beginning 50,000 years ago, the period beginning 40,000 years ago, the period beginning 30,000 years ago, and the period beginning 20,000 years ago can be connected. I have no information about the late prehistoric period including the early 8th millennium BC, late 8th millennium BC, early 7th millennium BC, late 7th millennium BC, early 6th millennium BC, or late 6th millennium BC.
I have no information about its history in the 5th millennium including the early 5th millennium BC, the early mid 5th millennium BC, the mid 5th millennium BC, the late mid 5th millennium BC, and the late 5th millennium BC. The 4th millennium BC including the early 4th millennium BC, the early mid 4th millennium BC, the mid 4th millennium BC, the late mid 4th millennium BC, and the late 4th millennium BC can be connected. The 3rd millennium BC including the early 3rd millennium BC, early mid 3rd millennium BC, mid 3rd millennium BC, the late mid 3rd millennium BC, and late 3rd millennium BC can be connected. In the 2nd millennium it is thought that Austronesian peoples arrived from Taiwan. Details of the early 2nd millennium BC, the early mid 2nd millennium BC, the mid 2nd millennium BC, the late mid 2nd millennium BC, and the late 2nd millennium BC are unknown. The early first millennium BC is little known. I have no details of the 10th century BC, the 9th century BC, the 8th century BC, the 7th century BC, or the 6th century BC.
Little information about its history in early classical times including the 5th century BC, the 4th century BC, the 3rd century BC, the 2nd century BC, or the 1st century BC is available. A few records and reports can be found in the late classical period, although I do not yet have detail for the 1st century CE, 2nd century CE, 3rd century CE, 4th century CE, or 5th century CE. More information is available in the early medieval period. I have no information for the 6th century, but in the 7th century, Buddhism entered through the Srivijaya kingdom. I have no information on the 8th century, the 9th century, or the 10th century. Slighly more information is available for the late medieval period. I have no details for the 11th century, the 12th century, or the 13th century, but in the 14th century, the Majajahit empire ruled most of Indonesia. In the 15th Century, Indonesia was visited by Chinese sailors.
It began to come under Western domination in the 16th century. I do not have details on the early 16th century, early-mid 16th century, mid 16th century, late-mid 16th century, or late 16th century, but sometime in this period, the Portuguese were establishing trading posts. I have no information on the development of Jakarta.
In the 17th century, the Dutch began to replace the Portuguese in Indonesia. In the early 17th century, they began displacing the Portuguese, and by the early-mid 17th century had founded Batavia (now known as Jakarta), were asserting their control vigorously, and had succeeded in displacing the Portuguese everywhere but the eastern part of Timor. I have no details on the mid 17th century, late-mid 17th century, or late 17th century.

In the early 19th century, the British briefly ruled Indonesia, but returned control to the Dutch government, which assumed direct rule. I do not yet have details for the early 1800s, late 1800s, early 1810s, or late 1810s. In the early-mid 19th century, the modern extent of Indonesia was settled by a treaty between the British, which claimed Malaya and the Dutch, who ruled the Dutch East Indies. I do not yet have details of the early 1820s, late 1820s, early 1830s, or late 1830s. I have few details for the mid 19th century including the early 1840s, late 1840s, early 1850s and late 1850s. I have few details for the late mid 19th century including the early 1860s, late 1860s, early 1870s, or late 1870s. In the late 19th century the Dutch rule tended toward exploitation rather than benefical government. In the early 1880s (1883) the volcanic island of Kratatoa exploded. I have no details for the late 1880s, early 1890s, or late 1890s.

In the early mid-20th century, I have few details. In the early 1920s, there was a revolt against Dutch rule, and in the late 1920s another, both of which were supressed. I have no information for the early 1930s or late 1930s. In the mid-20th century, Indonesia gained its independence. In the early 1940s, it was invaded by Japan in World War II. An anti-Japanese movement, led by Sukarno began in the late 1940s to resist the Dutch also when they attempted to reimpose their rule following the defeat of Japan, and Indonesia was granted independence. In the early 1950s and late 1950s, Sukarno was the ruler of Indonesia.
In the late-mid 20th century it proclaimed its non-alignment with major powers. In the early 1960s, Indonesia took control of Western New Guinea, and aggressively confronted the newly independent nation of Malaysia, but its economy declined. In the late 1960s, Sukarno was first stripped of power, then deposed and replaced by Suharto. I do not yet have details of 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, or 1975. In the early 1970s, Suharto led Indonesia. In the late 1970s Suharto led Indonesia. I do not yet have details for 1976, 1977, 1978, 1978, 1979, or 1980.
In the late 20th century, intensified political opposition to the rulers plus accusations of corruption led to considerable political unrest. In the early 1980s, Suharto led Indonesia.
