Chicago is the third largest city of the United States and is one of the 30 largest in the world. Its history is entirely modern. It was founded in the 18th century, specifically the late 18th century (1781). Details through the 19th century are not yet present. I do not yet have details of the early 19th century, early mid 19th century, mid 19th century, late-mid 19th century, or late 19th century. Its 20th century history is the focus of attention. I have no details for the early 20th century. In the early mid 20th century, it became notorious for battles among gangs and with the law during the prohibition era, but became the site of heavy industry and much black immigration. In the mid 20th century, it was dominated by "machine" politics, and many upper and middle class citizens moved out of the central city to the suburbs. In the late-mid 20th century, there was something of a decline in its industry and considerable social unrest. |
