Asiatic Civilization

Asiatic civilization is a large grouping that includes five categories, and any of the three major ones could be considered nearly as important as western civilization. However, they are not as well known and are grouped together because of the lesser amount of available material.

On this site, asiatic civilization is divided into Middle Eastern peoples, Oriental peoples, Indian peoples, Central Asian peoples, and Southeast Asian and Oceanic peoples.

Middle Eastern peoples

These include Levantine peoples, Mesopotamian peoples, peoples of Egypt, Anatolian peoples which have inhabited Turkey, Persian peoples, North African peoples, and Arabian peoples.

South Asian peoples

Indian peoples include roughly the inhabitants of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka although there are other groups, and the modern division into nations does not entirely reflect the sociology of these people.

Central Asian peoples

Central Asian peoples include Western Asian peoples living in the Caucasus region, Inner Asia, Mongolia, and Siberia.

Oriental peoples

Oriental peoples include major groups of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean peoples.

Southeast Asian and Oceanic peoples

This section includes not only mainland Southeast Asia, but peoples of the Southeast Asian island archipelagoes, the Australian aborigines, and the Polynesian peoples of the Pacific Ocean.

History

Asiatic peoples can be considered in some detail by examination of their history. They originated in prehistoric times, and the first civilizations were Asiatic. In antiquity, the ancient civilizations of the Sumerians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Persians, and the Harappan civilizations and early Chinese were prominent. In classical and medieval times, although some of these were conquered by Greeks and Romans, the Persian Indian, and Chinese civilizations were most prominent. Those of the Middle East were supplanted as Islam arose and spread widely throghout Asia. In modern times, Western Civilization had an increasing impact, but in the latest century, these peoples reasserted their political independence and identity, while retaining much of Western culture. Their future has scarcely been examined.

Other Sociology

There are various connections to other peoples of the world. Specific communities can be identified, and principles of social structure and change can be connected to Asiatic peoples.

Institutions

The institutions of the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, the Orient, and Southeast Asian peoples can all be considered.

Religion

Religion can be used to examine Middle Eastern, South Asian, Central Asian, Oriental, and Southeast Asian peoples.

Particular traditions can be used to examine Middle Eastern, South Asian, Central Asian, Oriental, and Southeast Asian peoples.

Asiatic religion can so far be applied to South Asian and Oriental peoples.

Persian religion including Zoroastrianism, Manicheanism, and Mithraism can be connected. Indian religion such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism, is especially important. Oriental religion including Confucianism, Taoism, and Shinto is also important.

Christianity originated among Asiatic peoples and is still present, though not as influential as in Western civilization. Primitive Christianity originated here. There are some Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox, and Mormons in many parts of Asia such as China, India, and Indonesia. Islam has become highly important throughout Asian peoples. Secularism is also represented. Pagan beliefs are significant. European pagan religion is not very significant, but Asian pagan religion is. African pagan and American Indian pagan religions are much less useful, and neopagan religions are also less important. Religious organization including unstructured, fragmented, and highly organized religions, practice, and beliefs, are not yet well described.

Government

Government can be applied to Middle Eastern peoples, South Asian peoples, Central Asian peoples, Oriental peoples, and Southeast Asian peoples.

International governments can be considered. Traditional empires are important. Colonial empires are significant. Modern compacts including temporary alliances, special purpose groups, regional groups, and world governments such as the League of Nations and the United Nations can be connected National governments, and local governments are also possible.

Anthropology

Particular groups will also be connected. Human geography provides much of the foundation for this discussion. The primary emphasis is on Asian geography. Southwest Asia is prominent, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and North Asia is also significant. European geography also has some place in studies of Asiatic civilization, and African geography does also. There are also connections to Oceanic geography.
