Electric charge distribution

How electrical charges are distributed in space is important in the study of electrostatics. There are some situation where electrical charges are in effect fixed in space, and others in which they are to some extent free to move, but an equlibrium position where forces on them are balanced.

Linear distributions.

These are cases where electric charges or electrically charged bodies lie on the same line. The simplest and most common special case is when two equal but opposite charges are separarated by a space. This is called an electric dipole. Other cases involve unequal charges, charges of the same sigh, and multiple charges: These can be examined as academic exercises, but may have applications.

Plane distributions

These are cases in which charges are distributed in a plane. Not only point charges but continuous distributions can be examined.

Space distributions

These are cases in which charges are distributed in space. Not o only point charges but continuous distributions can be examined.

Other areas of science including applications to chemistry, astronomy, earth science, and biology can be examined. Other areas of physics including mechanics, thermodynamics, other electromagnetism, relativity theory, quantum theory, and structure of matter will be closely connected.
