4.5 Billion years ago to 543 Million years ago. This includes about seven eighths of the earth's history. Its divisions are not yet well described here.

   

Hadean

4.5 to 3.8 Billion years years ago. This period is not formally recognized, in part because it predates the appearance of the oldest known rocks.

Archaean

3.8 to 2.5 Billion years ago. The oldest known rocks date to this period.

Proterozoic

2.5 Billion years to 548 Million years. Transition to oxygen atomsphere.
