Tetrapods

These (four footed) animals are further divided into modern groupings roughly equivalent to the amphibians, turtles (Formerly grouped with the reptiles), reptiles and birds (formerly considered a separate grouping), and mammals.

A small group, called the anapsids

Reptilians

A large groups, called the diapsids. This includes the extinct ichthyouaurs; the extinct dinosaurs, modern crocodilians and birds; the mostly extinct sphenodontids, and modern snakes and lizards.

Mammalians

A large and diverse group, containing most large and familiar animals. This includes extinct groups called synapsids, non-placental mammals, edentates, rodents, insectivores, ungulates, carnivores, bats, and primates.
