Mesozoic Life

248 Million years ago to 65 Million years ago. This is known for the dominance of gymnosperms and the like. Animal groups include, most popularly, the dinosaurs. This is divided into the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods.

   

Triassic

248-206 Million years ago. Pangaea existed. surviving plant groups included Lycophytes, glossopterids, & diconodonts. New plant groups included conifers, cycadeoids, and new animals included dinosaurs.

Jurassic

206-144 Million years ago. Pangaea began to break up. Plants included ferns, cycads, and bennettitaleans. Animals included ammonites, squid, fish, plant-eating dinosaurs. pleiosaurs and Ichthyousaurs, pterosaurs and birds.

Cretaceous

144 to 65 million years ago. Breakup of Pangea continued. Flowering plants developed. Insect groups developed. New groups of dinosaurs developed. Birds developed, modern mammals developed. A major mass extinction killed off most ammonites and dinosaurs.


The history of this subject is almost entirely modern, as earlier studies did not recognize it.
