These are actually part of a larger group called the synapsids

   

Pelycosaurs and therapsids

Extinct. Most of these died in the Permian extinction which ended the Paleozoic era, but a few survived into the Mesozoic. These are considered ancestral to the mammals.

Non-placental mammals

These include the monotremes, the multituberculates (extinct), and the marsupials.

Edentates

These include armadillos, sloths, and pangolins.

Rodents

This group includes not only the true rodents, but the lagomorphs.

Insectivores

Moles and shrews

Ungulates

These include the extinct condylarths, perissodactyls (one hoof), Artiodactyls (Cloven hoof), and cetaceans (the whales)

Carnivores

This group includes the creodonts as well as the true carnivores.

This is connected first to other sciences. Physics, chemistry, and astronomy are less directly significant than earth science.
