Interstellar medium

This includes the clouds of gas and dust between the stars. Although by terrestrial standards these are all excellent vacuums, at astronomical distances they are signifcant objects in their own right. Many of these are called nebulas, although some nebulas are actually other galaxies.

Regions include:

Coronal gas at densities of 10 -3 atoms / cm3 and temperatures of 106 K

Diffuse nebulas (H II regions) at densities of 103 atoms / cm3 and temperatures of 104 K

Warm gas at densities of 10-1 atoms / cm3 and temperatures of about 8000 K

Cool clouds(H I regions) at densities of 10 - 100 atoms / cm3 and temperatures of about 50 - 100 K

Bok globules at densities of 104 atoms / cm3 and temperatures of about 30 K

Giant molecular clouds at densities of 103 atoms / cm3 and temperatures of about 10 K
