Schroeder was born 7 Apr, 1944, in Mossenburg, Germany. His father was killed in World War II, and he left school at age 16 to help support his family. He worked in sales, and in 1963 joined the Social Democratic party. In 1966 - 71, he was able to continue his education. In 1978 he became Chairman of the Young Socialists. In 1980 he was elected to the Bundestag, where he served until 1986. |

In 1988 he was elected to the Parliament of Lower Saxony. In 1998 he was elected chancellor of Germany, succeding Helmut Kohl, and in 2002 was reelected to that position. He was among the chief opponents to the US invasion of Iraq. |
