In the early 1960s, about 1962, he ended his television career. In the late 1960s, in 1966 he ran for office as Governor of California, and in 1968 announced his candidacy for President of the United States. Nixon was nominated instead, and Reagan was reelected as governor of California in 1970. I do not yet have details of the early 1970s. In the late 1970s, In 1976, he again ran for the Presidency, but Nixon's appointed vice president Gerald Ford was nominated instead. In 1980 he defeated George Bush for the Republican nomination, but selected him as his vice presidential candidate, easily defeated incumbentJimmy Carter in the election, and became the 39th President of the United States. Early 1980s In early 1981, Reagan was wounded in an assassination attempt, but recovered quickly and pushed his program. He strongly criticized the Soviet Union and attempted to reverse the growth of government programs and a welfare state in the United States, impose tax cuts, and build up the US Military, particularly in strategic weapons. There were a number of limited military ventures during his first term. In 1984, he and Bush were reelected. Late 1980s His second term was more controversial, but he welcomed the changes in the Soviet Union initiated by Gorbachev, and US-Soviet relations improved dramatically. In 1989, his Vice-President George Bush was elected to the Presidency. Early 1990s Reagan continued to speak at home and internationally to promote his particular views, but in 1994, he announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and went into seclusion. Late 1990s I have no information about this period. In the early 2000s, Reagan died on June 5, 2004. |
