Maxwell was born on Nov 23. 1831 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He showed early interest and ability in mathematics and his first scientific paper was published when he was 14. He obtained a degree in mathematics and was appointed professor of natural history in Scotland in 1856, but later moved to England. There he did research in celestial mechanics, electromagnetic theory, and thermodynamics. |

Maxwell published his Theory of Heat in 1871, in which he derived relationships between thermodynamic quantities that are still used today, and published his Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism in 1873, which put the laws discovered by Faraday in mathematical form and predicted the existence of electromagnetic waves. Maxwell died on Nov 5, 1879. |
