John Major

Major was Born 29 Mar 1943 in Surrey, England. He was raised in Brixton, and at age 16 left school to work and help support his family.

In 1968 - 1971 he returned to school and earned a higher degree, and afterwards entered local politics. In 1979 he was elected to Parliament in the Conservative Party. and was reelected in 1983.

In 1987 after another election, he was chosen as one of the Cabinet ministers, and in 1989 was chosen as Foreign secretary, then as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Following a struggle for Conservative Party leadership, he was selected in 1990 as Prime Minister in place of Margaret Thatcher. He lead British support of the United States in the Persian Gulf War, and in 1992 retained his seat in Parliament. in 1995, dissatisfaction with his leadership led to his resignation as leader of the Conservative party, but he was reelected to this post. However, in 1997 the Conservative Party was soundly defeated by the Labour Party, and he was succeeded as Prime Minister by Tony Blair. He wrote his political memoirs in 1999 and in 2001 retired from Parliament.
