Kohl was born 3 Apr 1930 in Ludwigshuten, Germany. In 1947, following WWII, he joined the Christian Democratic party, and began to follow a career in local politics. From 1969 to 1976 he was the Primeir of Rhineland- Palatinate state. In 1976 was he was elected to the Bundestag, aidn in 1982 succeeded Helmut Schmidt as Chancellor. He was reelected in 1987, and in 1989-90, presided over the reunification of Germany following the removal of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the East German government, and in 1991 elected as chancellor of the reunited Germany. In 1994 he was reelected chancellor, but in 1998 was succeeded by Gerhard Schroeder. |
