Gorbachev was born in the early mid 20th century, on 2 March 1931, in Privolye, Russia. He entered a political career in the mid 20th century. He joined the Communist Youth League in 1946. He entered Law school in 1952, and became a member of the Communist Party. He graduated in 1955, and went on to hold various increasingly responsible in the party. In the late mid 20th century, he began to rise in political prominence. In 1971 he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist party. He became a candidate member of the Politburo in 1979 and a full member in 1980. In the late 20th century, he was a prominent political figure. In 1985 he was selected as General Secretary of the Communist party (the highest position), and initiated a number of reform programs. In 1987, he called for programs of increase openness (glasnost) and restructuring (Perestroika). In 1988 he became President of the USSR, initiated the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. In 1989, he declined to order military intervention as a number of Communist governments in Eastern Europe were replaced. In 1991 he was placed under house arrest as other members of the Politburo attempted a coup in an attempt to reverse his reforms. The coup failed, but several leaders of the 15 Soviet Republics who had opposed the coup demanded independence from the USSR. At the end of 1991, these demands were granted and Gorbachev stepped down as President of the USSR. With the decline of the Communist Party, Gorbachev lost most of his political influence, but remains active in political affairs. He is still living in the early 21st century and remains active in political affairs, though without his former influence. |
