Sociology including social structure and change, communities and peoples is also significant. Specific nations are not yet connected. He is a prominent figure of Western Civilization. He was principally associated with Latin peoples. He is believed to have been born in what is now Italy, but became a subject of Spain, which sponsored his voyages and discoveries. His voyages and discoveries initiated the Western colonization and conquest of the American Indian peoples.

Institutions

Family is significant. I have little information on marriage, parenting, kinship, or particular families. Connections to formal education including research, teaching, cultural institutions, educational organization, and particular schools are connected. There is a strong connection with economics including economic activities, industries, and economic systems, as his discoveries created a major extension of shipping and commerce. There is some connection with government including law, government activity, government structure, and particular governents. Columbus was appointed governor of the lands he discovered, but was incompetent as an official and removed from office. There is a greater connection with religion than is commonly known, though beliefs, practice, organization, and particular religions can be connected.

Culture

Material culture including industrial technology, building technology, foodstuffs, and clothing is mostly indirectly significant. Trnsportation tehcnology (sailing ships) is important in his life. Communication technology and other artifacts are more or elss incidental. . Conceptual culture including language, graphic arts, literture, mathematics, applied science, and philosophy can be made. Behavioral culture including customs, occupations, recreation and entertainment, and cultural events can be considered.

Anthropology including social foundations, demography, physical anthropology, and human geography is useful in part for human geography, including European geography. His knowledge of Asian geography was sketchy at best. Particular groups can possibly be connected.

Other personal studies. The human body, and psychology can be connected. There are also connections to other biographies.

Science is at present only weakly and indirectly connected to Columbus. Physics, chemistry, and astronomy have little influence, but his voyages contributed substantially to Earth science. Biology has little direct influence.
