Clinton was born 19 Aug 1946 in Arkansas, and named William Jefferson Blythe IV, three months after his father died. His mother married Roger Clinton c. 1950, and in high school Bill adopted his stepfather's name. As a student, he had the opportunity to meet with President Kennedy and decided to pursue a career in politics. |

Clinton graduated from Georgetown University in 1968 and recieved a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where he studied for two years. He returned to the United States in 1970 to Yale University law school and recived his degree in law in 1983. He ran for Congress in 1974 but was defeated, married Hilary Rodham in 1975, was elected Attorney General of Arkansas in 1976 and governor in 1978. He was defeated for reelection in 1980, but returned to office in 1982 and served until 1992. In 1992 Clinton ran for the Presidency of the United States against the incumbent George H.W, Bush, and was elected as the 42nd President of the United States. He was followed by accusations of improper behavior, an attempt at directing a massive health care reform was unsuccessful, and his foreign policy was marked by frequent reversals of position. However, he enjoyed the benefits of a strong economy and relative prosperity, and was reelected in 1996. Following accusations of sexual misconduct with a junior staff member and his initial denials of it, he was the second US president to be impeached, in 1998. His trial in the Senate failed to remove him on a 50-50 vote, and his second term ended in 2000. His vice president Albert Gore ran for the presidency, but was defeated by George W. Bush. |
