Jacques Rene Chirac

Chirac was born 29 Aug 1932. He was educated in the Lycee Louis-Grand and graduated in 1950, then went on to the Institut d'Etudes Politique from 1951 to 1954.

He served in the military from 1954-57 and was wounded in the French-Algerian war. Afterwards, in 1959, he attended the Ecole d' Administration.In 1960 he became the administrator of the government accounting Office and in 1962 an under Secretary of State under Georges Pompidou. In 1967 He was elected to the National Assembly of france, and in 1968 had an important role in settling a dispute between the government and students.

From 1974 - 1976 he served as Prime Minister and was selected as Mayor of Paris in 1977. He ran for election as President of France in 1981 but was defeated by Mitterand. From 1986 - 1988 he was selected as Prime Minister when President Mitterand did not hold a majority in the National assembly, and ran for President in 1988, but was again defeated. In 1995 he ran again for the Presidency of France and this time was successful. In 2002 he ran for reelection. His popularity had seriously declined, but the opposition was split among factions and he was elected again in a second round. In 2003, he led international opposition to the US invasion of Iraq.
