Carter was born 1 Oct 1924 in plains, Georgia. He attended the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He graduated in 1946, and served in the Navy for 7 years, 5 of them in submarines. In 1953 he resigned his commission and returned to Georgia, where he managed his father's peanut farm operations. In the late 1960s, he was elected governor of Georgia in 1970. In the early 1970s, in 1974 announced his candidacy for the US Presidency. In the late 1970s, In 1976 he was elected 38th President of the United States, defeating the incumbent Gerald Ford. His term was noted for a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, but also the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and for an Iranian revolution that produced a prolonged hostage crisis. In 1980 He was defeated in his bid for reelection by Ronald Reagan. In the late 20th century including the early 1980s, late 1980s, early 1990s, and late 1990s, since his presidency, Carter has been active as an author, in private efforts at mediation of international disputes, and in various humanitarian and other projects.
