James Earl (Jimmy) Carter, Jr.

Carter was born 1 Oct 1924 in plains, Georgia. He attended the US Naval Academy in Annapolis.

He graduated in 1946, and served in the Navy for 7 years, 5 of them in submarines. In 1953 he resigned his commission and returned to Georgia, where he managed his father's peanut farm operations. In 1962 he ran for the Georgia State Senate and was elected, and reelected in 1964.

He was elected governor of Georgia in 1970, and in 1974 announced his candidacy for the US Presidency. In 1976 he was elected 38th President of the United States, defeating the incumbent Gerald Ford. His term was noted for a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, but also the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and for an Iranian revolution that produced a prolonged hostage crisis. In 1980 He was defeated in his bid for reelection by Ronald Reagan.

Since his presidency, Carter has been active as an author, in private efforts at mediation of international disputes, and in various humanitarian and other projects.
