Bush was born in Milford, Massachusetts, on 12 Jun 1924. He was a student leader at Phillips academy. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. During World War II he was a torpedo bomber pilot and flew 58 combat missions, was once shot down, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (1942-1944). |

At the war's end, Bush was married in 1945 and attended Yale University. His eldest son George Walker Bush was born in 1946. He graduated from Yale in 1948 and moved to Texas, where he went to work in oil-field equipment sales, and in 1953 established his own oil company. In 1959 he became active in the Republican Party. In the early 1960s, in 1964 he unsuccessfully ran for Senator. In the late 1960s, he was elected as a representative in 1966, and after two terms ran again for Senator in 1970, again unsuccessfully. In the late 1970s, he was appointed as Ambassador to the United Nations in 1971 - 1972, and in 1973 was selected as Chairman of the National Republican Committee. At first he supported President Nixon in the Watergate scandal, but in 1974 he called for the President's resignation. Nixon's succesor Gerald Ford appointed Bush as chief of the US Liaison office in Beijing. In the late 1970s, in 1976 as director of the CIA, where he served for a year. In 1980 Bush ran for the Presidency and was unsuccessful, but was selected by Ronald Reagan as his running mate and was elected vice president. In 1984 he was reelected as Reagan's vice-president. In 1988 ran for the presidency himself, and succeeded Reagan as 41st President of he United States. As president he is noted for American leadership of the Persian Gulf war, in 1990-91. In 1992 he ran for reelection as President but was defeated by Bill Clinton. Bush then retired from politics. The early 21st century including the early 2000s can be connected.
