Alexander

Alexander III of Macedonia, also known as Alexander the Great, was born in 356 BC at Pella, Macedonia. He was the son and heir of Phillip II of Macedonia. As a youth (age 13-16) he was a pupil of Aristotle.

On his father's assassination in 336, Alexander was acclaimed by the army as king. He had inherited plans for the invasion of Persia and put down a rebellion of greek city-states in preparation for it, In 334 he invaded Persia and won his first major victory. In 333 he defeated the forces of Darius, the Persian emperor, at the battle of Issus. He then conquered the city of Tyre after a siege, and Egypt in 332. In 331 he again defeated Darius at the decisive battle of Gaugamela, and occupied the Persian capital. In 330 Darius was killed, and Alexander claimed the title of King of Persia. From 329 to 327 he campaigned in eastern Persia and reached India, but his army refused to go further and he turned back. and in 324 returned to Susa. In 323 he was taken ill after a long banquet and drinking bout, and died in Bablylon at the age of 32. Alexander had no heir and his empire became divided among his generals.

   

Science including physics, chemistry, astronomy, earth science, and biology has little direct connection to the life of Alexander, although they may prove applicable. The life of Alexander can be examined using studies of the human body and psychology, and anthropology .

 

Culture including material culture, conceptual culture, and behavioral culture will be significant.

He is connected to institutions. Family is important and he was something of a patron of education and involved in economics. He is most closely asociated with government. Religion including religious belief, practice, organization, and particular religions will be useful.

In sociology, he contributed to social structure and change, notably a Hellenization process in much of the known world. He founded numerous communities and cities, and is associated primarily with Western civilization, particularly Balkan peoples, but also Asiatic peoples, including the Middle East and South Asia as far as India

Alexander lived during the early classical period of history, specifically the 4th century BC.
