Their history is entirely obscure, and next to nothing is known with certainty for prehistory, antiquity, and classical and medieval history.

They have been described and studied in modern times. although I do not yet have details of the 16th century, 17th century or 18th century. The 19th century including the early 19th century, early mid 19th century, mid 19th century, late mid 19th century, and late 19th century can be considered.
