The officials of governments are appointed by a higher authority, while those of autonomous governments are selected locally. Its origins are lost in prehistory, but there is some precedent for them in antiquity, and some in classical and medieval times including early classical, late classical, early medieval, and late medieval times. Local governments as presently known have arisen and spread worldwide in the modern period. References to them up to the 19th century will be found as the site is further examined, but I have particular interest in the 20th century. I have little information on developments through the late 20th, century, but some fragments from the early 21st century including the early 2000s and late 2000s. Their future is unknown.
