1974 Nixon becomes first US President to resign from office. He is succeeded by his appointed vice president Gerald Ford as 38th president of the United States.

In 1971 East Pakistan gained full independence from Pakistan as Bangladesh with Mujib as head of government. He was assassinated in 1975. Among South Asian peoples, India supported the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan and tested a nuclear weapon. In Pakistan East Pakistan, aided by India, successfully declared independence as Bangladesh. The military government collapsed and Ali Bhutto led a democratic government. Among Oriental peoples, The Peoples Republic of China was internationally recognized as the legitimate government of China, instead of the former nationalist government based on Taiwan. Among Southeast Asian peoples, Suharto led Indonesia. American Indian peoples including the United States and Brazil can be connected. This is not closely connected to other areas of history up through classical and medieval times. Connections with modern history through the 19th century are weak. Connections with most of the 20th century through the mid 20th century are also limited. This is preceded in the late-mid 20th century by the late 1960s.
