In January Mahmoud Abbas was elected president of the Palestinian Authority, George W. Bush began his second terma as President of the United States, and Parliamentary elections occurred in Iraq. I do not at present events for February or March.
In April, Pope John Paul II died, and was succeeded by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who became Pope Benedict XVI. In May, the proposed European Constitution was rejected by a referendum in France, and in June, by a similar referendum in the Netherlands.
In July, terrorist bombings in London occupied world attention briefly, and the Provisional IRA called and end to its armed campaign and ordered all units to drop arms. In August, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and surrounding areas of the Gulf Coast states of the United States. In September, John Roberts was confirmed as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
In October, Major events included the nomination of Harriet Miers for the US Supreme court. This nomination was wthdrawn and Samuel Alito was nominated. Lech Kaczyrisky was elected President of Poland, and a new national Constitution was approved in Iraq. In November, civil unrest caused the Prime Minister of France to declare a state of emergency. The people of Iraq elected legislators to their Parliament under a new Constitution. In December, New York City transit workers went on strike three days before the Christmas holiday.

At present I am noting and sorting events according to the peoples of the earth. African people have been set aside for now. Particular nations including those of Russia, Nigeria, Japan, Mexico, and the Philippines can be connected. Western Civilization will be considered. I have no specific details for Brazil. Anglic peoples are getting first attention. Anglo-American peoples including Canadian, and British Caribbean may be examined. British and Australian peoples will be noted. In the United States, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, resulting in the breach of levees and flooding of 80% of the city. Other parts of the Gulf coast were affected by it and other hurricanes. Latin peoples, Germanic peoples, Scandinavian peoples, Northeast European and Balkan peoples will also be considered. Asiatic peoples will have considerable attention. In Bangladesh I have no recorded events. South Asian peoples can be considered. In India I have no major events recorded. In Pakistan, rebels in Baluchistan were attacked by government forces. Bengal peoples will also be considered. Oriental peoples including those of China, the Japanese, and Korean peoples will also be discussed. Southeast Asian peoples will be considered. In Indonesia there was an earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Sumatra. Bombings took place in Bali. Middle Eastern peoples are not yet well developed. Central Asian peoples will also be getting a little attention. American Indian peoples such as are found in the United States and Brazil will eventually be connected. Connections to prehistory, antiqity, and classical and medieval history are weak. Earlier modern history, including the 18th and 19th centuries is also a bit weak. Other areas of 20th century history including the late-mid 20th century and early periods of the late 20th century can also be discussed. The late 1990s are not so directly connected, but within the early 2000s, this follows events of 2004. It is followed directly by events of 2006. |
