Following a terrorist attack in the US sponsored by a militant group called al-Qaeda, the US invaded Afghanistan.
The United States reorganized its Department of Homeland Security. Hu Jintao became General Secretary of the Communist Party.
In the 2nd quarter, the filling of the reservoir behind the controversial Three Gorges dam in China began. US forces occupied Baghdad. The US Supreme court ruled that sodomy laws were unconstitutional. In the 3rd quarter, a European Constitution was proposed. In the 4th quarter, China launched its first manned space misson, the Massachussets Supreme Court ruled that laws prohibiting same sex marriage were unconstitutional, and Saddam Hussein was captured.
In the 1st quarter, notable events included the French National Assembly banning the wearing of religious symbols or clothing in schools, terrorist bombings in Madrid, Spain. In the 2nd quarter, Same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachussets in the US, the European Union added ten members, the US transferred power to an intering government in Iraq, and the Congress party won an unexpected victory in India. In the 3rd quarter, John Kerry was nominated as Democratic candidate for US Preseident, in opposition to incumbent George Bush. Mexico and Japan signed a free trade agreement. Chechen terrorists took hostages at a school in a town named Beslan, which was stormed by Russian security forces, killing most of the terrorists and many hostages. In the 4th quarter, George Bush was reelected President of the United States, European leaders sign the Treaty of Rome, proposing a European Constitution and Yasser Arafat of the Palestinian authority died. A massive earthquake in the Indian Ocean near Indonesia caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in nations surrounding the Indian Ocean.
In the 1st quarter, US President George Bush began his second term of office, Iraq held elections for a new provisional Parliament, and Mahmoud Abbas was elected President of the Palestinian authority. In the 2nd quarter, Pope John Paul II died and was succeeded by Pope Benedict XVI. French and Dutch voters rejected the proposed European Constitution. In the 3rd quarter, bombings in London by an Islamic-terrorist-related group took place. The IRA called an end to its armed campaign in Northern Ireland; Huricane Katrina hit the southern US, and a new Chief Justice of the US Supreme court was sworn in. In the 4th quarter, there was civil unrest in France. Parliamentary elections for a new parliament in Iraq were held, and a new President was elected in Poland. Terrorist bombings in Bali, Indonesia gained world attention.
