Sociology Applied to Early Medieval History

Peoples of the world, communities, and social structure and change can be used in examination of early medieval history.

   

Sociology

Sociology can be applied to examination of the 6th century CE, 7th century CE, 8th century CE, 9th century CE, and 10th century CE.

Peoples of the world

Particular nations and major peoples of the world including Western Civilization, Asiatic peoples, African peoples, and American Indian peoples can be used to examine early medieval times.

Nations

Haiti, Burundi, Benin, Austria Azerbaijan, Honduras, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Tajikistan, Israel, El Salvador, Hong Kong, Paraguay, Laos, Sierra Leone, Jordan, Libya, Papua, Togo, Nicaragua, Denmark, Slovakia, Kyrgystan, Finland, Turkmenistan, Eritrea, Norway, Georgia, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Central African Republic, Moldova, Costa Rica, New Zealand, Ireland, Palestinian, Lebanon, Puerto Rico, Congo, Albania, Lithuania, Uruguay, Mauritania, Liberia, Oman, and Panama can be considered.

Western civilization

The records of Western Civilization are so fragmentary and incomplete that this period was known as the dark ages. Scandinavian peoples can be followed. Sweden can be connected. Cities include Madrid.

Anglic peoples

Warious Germanic peoples invaded and occupied what is now the UK. London was a significant city.

Latin peoples

Among the Latin peoples, I have little information on Portugal. Cities include Paris. Among Italic peoples, Italy was invaded by several different peoples, and was disunited. Among French peoples, France was occupied by the Franks, who were Germanic in origin, and was included in the empire of Charlemagne. Among Hispanic peoples, I do not have definite information on Spain except that most of it was conquered by the Muslims.

Germanic peoples

Among Germanic peoples, in Germany, the empire of Charlemagne and his successors was important. The Netherlands were part of Charlemagne's empire, but were later divided between French and Germanic people. Belgium can be connected.

Northeast European peoples

I do not yet have details of Belarus. In Russia, the Kievan state was founded. In Ukraine, various peoples such as Bulgars, Avars, Khazars, and Magyars came from or through the area. I have no details on Poland. I have no details for the Czech Republic. Hungary appears to have been settled by Magyar peoples from Western Asia.

Balkan peoples

I have insufficient information on Balkan peoples including those of Romania, Greece, and Serbia.

Asiatic peoples

Middle Eastern peoples, South Asian peoples, Central asian peoples, Oriental peoples, and Southeast Asian peoples may give some information about early medieval history. These include Tunisia. Sian can be connected.

Middle Eastern peoples

Syria can be connected. Baghdad can be connected. In Turkey, the region was mostly ruled by the Byzantine empire. Istanbul can be connected. In Egypt the country was taken from Byzantine control by the Persians, and taken from them by the Muslims. An Islamic dynasty called the Fatamids came to power. Cairo was founded as an Islamic city. Among Mesopotamian peoples, Iraq was conquered by the Muslims. Among Persian peoples, in Iran, the Sassanid empire was conquered by the Omayyad caliphate of Islam, which was in turn conquered by the Abbasid caliphate. I have no details for Afghanistan. Tehran can be connected. Among Arabian peoples including what is now Saudi Arabia, the new religion of Islam was founded, began to spread rapidly by conquest, and became a new and principal focus of the Middle East. I have no details of Yemen. Among North African peoples, I have no details for Morocco except that it was conquered by the Muslims. Algeria was also conquered by the Muslims.

South Asian peoples

India suffered and absorbed numerous invasions. The site of Delhi was inhabited. Islam may have begun to enter Pakistan. Lahore can be connected. I have no details on Bangladesh. Dacca was founded. I have no details of Nepal or Sri Lanka. Bangalore can be connected.

Central Asian peoples

Kazakhstan can be considered. Inner Asian peoples including those of Parts of China, parts of Russia, and Uzbekistan can be connected.

Oriental peoples

I have no details of North Korea. Shenyang can be connected. In China, the Sui, T'ang, and Song dynasties ruled. Dongguan can be considered. In North Central China, Beijing can be connected. In South Central China, Wuhan can be connected. In Southern Coastal China, Canton can be considered. In Southern Interior China, Chengdu can be connected. Chungking can be connected. I have no details of Taiwan at present. In Japan, Buddhism entered China and the Japanese began to assert cultural independence from China. The site of Tokyo was inhabited. Osaka was briefly the capital of Japan. I have no details of South Korea I have no details on the development of Seoul.

Southeast Asian peoples

I have little information on Cambodia for this period. Rangoon can be connected. I have little information on the Southeast Asian mainland. I have no information on Malaysia. I have little information on Vietnam,Thailand or Burma for this period. I also have little information on the Southeast Asian archipelagoes. I have no information on the Philippines. Jakarta developed as a port city. In Indonesia is little known, but Buddhism entered during this period. I have no information on Australia for this period.

African peoples

I know little of Somalia. Communities may have included Lagos.

East African peoples

I have no definite information on Chad. In Northern East Africa, in Ethiopia, the Christian kingdom of Axum seemed to have declined. I have no definite information on Interior East Africa including Sudan. I have no definite information on Central East Africa including Rwanda. Tanzania can be connected. Kenya can be connected.Uganda can be connected.

West African peoples

I have no information on Guinea in these times. I have little information about Southern Coastal West Africa including Nigeria, Ghana, or Cote d'Ivoire during this period. I have no information on Western Coastal West Africa including Senegal during this period. I have no information on Interior Western African peoples including those of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali for this period.

Southern African peoples

I have no definite information on South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Malawi, Zimbabwe, or Zambia.

Central African peoples

I have no definite information about Congo, Cameroon, or Angola.

American Indian peoples

Middle American Indian peoples, South american Indian peoples, and North American Indian peoples may give some information about early medieval times. I have no details on Bolivia at present.

Middle American Indian peoples

I have no details on Dominican Republic at present. Meso-American peoples including those of Guatemala can be connected. Mexico can be connected. Caribbean peoples including those of Cuba can be connected. Southwestern American Indian peoples including those of the southwestern United States and Mexico can be considered.

South American Indian peoples

I have no information on Ecuador. I have no details at present on Andean peoples including those of Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, or Chile. I have no details at present on Amazonian peoples including those of Brazil and Argentina. I have little information on Cono/Southern American Indian people such as those of Argentina and Chile.

North American Indian peoples

Those found in the United States and Canada are not yet well known. Eastern North American Indian peoples, Western North American Indian peoples, and Northern North American Indian peoples can be connected.

Communities

Communities will be developed as they are better studied. [ Poona, St. Petersburg, Kuala Lumpur, Nanking, Singapore, Guadalajara, Alexandria, Chittagong, Phoenix, Sydney, Algiers, and Harbin]

Social structure and change

Social change including social change factors can be examined.

Particular changes can be considered. The agricultural revolution can be connected. The Agrarian revolution including bronze age developments, early iron age developments, and late iron age developments can be considered. Early modern developments had not yet materialized.

Social change processes including innovation, transmission, adaptation, and extinction can be connected.

Social types including hunting and gathering, horticultural, and agrarian types were present. Social structure including anthropological structure, cultural structure, institutional structure, and class structure can be considered.
