1638 Harvey publishes work giving the first correct description of the function of the heart and circulation of the blood.

1674 - 1723 Leeuwenhoek uses microscope to discover and study insects, protozoa, and bacteria.

1796-1798 Jenner introduces vaccination as a means to prevent smallpox.

c. 1846 Morton introduces use of ether for surgical anesthesia.

c. 1847 - 1885 Pasteur establishes bacterial origin of many diseases and infections and develops methods of treatment.

c 1865 - 1877. Lister introduces antiseptic methods into surgery.

1895 - 1898 Freud publishes work on psychoanalysis and dream interpretation.

1895 Roentgen discovers X-rays.

1905 Freud publishes his theories of sexuality and its influence on psychological development.

1928 Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin, the first antibiotic.

c. 1965 Pincus publishes work on human endocrine system that leads to development of a birth-control pill.


Connections to history including prehistory and antiquity can be made. Classical and medieval history including early classical, late classical, early medieval, and late medieval history can be connected. Modern history including the 16th century, 17th century, 18th century, 19th century, and 20th century will be useful. The future has not yet been closely examined.
