20th century

It originated in the late 20th century, specifically the late 1980s. It continued to develop in the early 1990s and late 1990s.

early 21st century

In the early 2000s it gained international attention in 2001 with the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York City, I do not yet have many details of 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. In the late 2000s includng 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010 it continued to be a significant target of US warfare. In the early 2010s, in 2011 its principal leader Osama bin Ladin was killed. I do not yet have events of the first quarter 2011 or second quarter 2011.
